The short version

FE lecturers teach trades and academic subjects in colleges to a genuinely mixed cohort — 16–19s, apprentices, adult returners. The draw: you don't need QTS. Industry experience gets you hired and you qualify on the job, often employer-funded. The honest trade-off: England's FE has no binding national pay spine, and lecturer pay runs behind school scales.

Colleges chronically can't recruit construction, engineering, health and digital staff — industry pays better. If you have the trade, you're the scarce resource.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Industry-to-classroom — get hired on your trade, take a Level 5 teaching qualification alongside work.
  • PGCE/CertEd post-16 — for academic subjects.
  • Assessor/trainer roles — a natural bridge from vocational work.
