The short version

Retail store managers own a shop's numbers — sales targets, staffing, stock, shrink and the team delivering it. It's the most open route to real commercial responsibility without a degree: shop floor to store manager is a well-worn path.

The pitch: P&L accountability in your twenties, a clear ladder to area management at £██–███K, and skills that transfer everywhere. The catch: weekends and Christmas are the job, your team churns constantly, and the spread between a convenience store and a flagship is enormous.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Shop floor up — sales assistant → supervisor → deputy → store manager. The dominant route.
  • Graduate schemes — Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, M&S run structured (and sometimes very well-paid) schemes.
  • Sideways from hospitality — duty-manager experience transfers directly.
