The short version

Life in the Army, Royal Navy or RAF is a package deal most careers can't replicate: subsidised housing and food, paid elite training, real adventure — and a 24/7 liability where the service decides where you live and when you're away.

The pitch: published pay with strong recent rises, a non-contributory pension, and skills and qualifications that transfer to civilian life. The catch: postings move you (and your family) on the service's schedule, retention problems are real and documented, and operational risk is actual risk.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Soldier/rating direct entry — no degree needed; aptitude tests pick your trade.
  • Officer via Sandhurst, Dartmouth or Cranwell — A-levels minimum, degree common.
  • Bursaries and reserves — sponsorship through university, or part-time service to test the fit.
