The short version

Environmental consultants assess the impact of what clients want to build — contaminated land, flood risk, environmental impact assessment, regulatory compliance. It's commercial science: fieldwork early on, report writing always, and a professional opinion someone pays for.

The pitch: structural demand — planning rules, net-zero targets and biodiversity net gain all need qualified sign-off — and pay that climbs properly once you're chartered. The catch: graduate salaries lag the degree requirement, the fieldwork fades as you get senior, and chartership is the real gate on the good money.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Environmental science / earth sciences degree — the standard route into graduate schemes.
  • Adjacent degree + environmental MSc — a well-worn conversion for chemists, geographers and biologists.
  • Level 6/7 degree apprenticeship — the environmental practitioner standard; growing but still rare.
  • Regulator background — Environment Agency and local authority experience crosses over well.
