The short version

Big Four auditors test whether company accounts tell the truth — sampling transactions, vouching documents, judging whether the numbers give a true and fair view. It's the industry's biggest training pipeline: three years of paid ACA exams on a structured scheme at Deloitte, PwC, EY or KPMG.

The pitch: the most portable qualification in business — newly qualified auditors get bid for by every finance function in the country, and the career options afterwards are enormous. The catch: trainee pay is mediocre for the workload, busy season means 45–60 hour weeks stacked on top of exam revision, and the junior work itself is being automated fastest — analytics platforms now test 100% of transactions where you once tested a sample.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Graduate programme — all four firms hire any-discipline grads onto ACA training contracts.
  • School leaver / Level 7 apprenticeship — same qualification, no degree, no debt.
  • Mid-tier first — BDO, Grant Thornton, Mazums train the same ACA; move up post-qualification.
