The short version

Bookkeepers keep small businesses' financial records honest — ledgers, invoices, payroll, VAT returns. It's the plumbing of business: invisible until it breaks, then suddenly the most important thing in the building.

The pitch: a genuinely low-barrier finance trade — no degree, AAT or IAB/ICB qualifications taken part-time, flexible hours, and a real self-employment path with a sellable client book at the end. The catch — and it's a big one: this is the most automated job in the sector. Bank feeds auto-reconcile, apps code the transactions, and the employed ceiling is modest. The version that survives is advisory-plus-software: the person who cleans up bad records and tells the owner what their numbers mean.

Entry routes that actually work

  • AAT qualification — Levels 2–4, part-time, no prior experience needed; the recognised credential.
  • IAB / ICB certificates — the specialist bookkeeping route, especially for self-employment.
  • Admin sideways — finance admin roles pick up ledgers and reconciliations, then qualify alongside.
