The short version
Financial analysts turn a company's numbers into forecasts, budgets and board packs — the people leadership asks "can we afford this?" before every significant decision. It's the quieter, steadier cousin of the City careers: real influence without the investment banking hours.
The pitch: solid pay that compounds with a CIMA/ACCA/CFA qualification, civilised hours outside reporting and budget season, and a springboard into finance management, data or strategy roles. The catch: a large share of the junior job is data assembly — pulling, cleaning, reformatting — which is exactly the work AI copilots are compressing first. The analysts who thrive are the ones who can say which assumption in the model is a lie.
Entry routes that actually work
- Graduate finance scheme — corporate rotational schemes, usually with CIMA/ACCA study support.
- Transactional route — start in accounts assistant roles, move sideways into analysis; works without a degree.
- Practice transfer — newly qualified accountants pivoting out of audit into FP&A.
- Numerate-degree route — economics, maths and data grads entering analyst programmes in banking and insurance.
