The short version

Photographers and videographers make the images and footage — but the majority are freelance, which makes this the most "small business" career in the Atlas. The camera work is the minority; editing, client management and self-marketing are the job.

The pitch: autonomous, tangible work and strong day rates once established. The catch: uneven freelance income, real kit costs upfront, and the commodity end of the market (stock, product shots) is being automated away — live and real-world work is what survives.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Second-shooting / assisting — learn the business inside someone else's before launching your own.
  • Content-creator route — an audience doubles as your marketing pipeline for commercial clients.
  • Employed first — studio or in-house content roles give you a salary while you build skills and contacts.
