The short version

Civil engineers design and deliver the infrastructure everything sits on — roads, bridges, water, flood defences, energy. It's the oldest engineering discipline and still the one whose output you can drive past.

The pitch: a long pipeline of funded work (water, grid, housing), a chartership that genuinely moves pay, and work AI assists rather than replaces. The catch: it's cyclical with government capital spending, early-career site work means long days in real weather, and the best money follows major programmes — mostly around London and the South East.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Accredited civil engineering degree (MEng) — the direct line to ICE chartership via graduate schemes.
  • Civil engineer degree apprenticeship (Level 6) — earn on major projects while studying.
  • Technician apprenticeship (Level 3/4) — EngTech first, top up to Incorporated Engineer later.
