The short version

CNC machinists turn metal stock into precision parts — but the job title hides three jobs: operators who load and press start, setters who get new jobs running, and programmers who write the toolpaths. The pay difference between them is the whole story.

The pitch: skilled setter-programmers are genuinely scarce, pay climbs visibly as you move up the three grades, and the sector keeps growing while experienced machinists retire. The catch: it's still a factory — shift patterns, coolant, production pressure — and pure operator roles are the part lights-out automation is genuinely eating.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Level 3 engineering/machining apprenticeship — the route that produces proper programmers, not button-pushers.
  • NVQ + operator start — in at operator level, push toward setting.
  • Manual machinist crossover — conventional cutting feel makes excellent programmers.
