The short version

Maintenance engineers keep the plant running — fault-finding, fixing and preventing the breakdowns that cost thousands an hour. When you fix it, the whole factory feels it within the hour; when everything works, nobody remembers you exist.

The pitch: one of the hardest roles in the country to fill, with shift premiums and overtime that routinely beat the advertised salary, and about the most AI-proof job in engineering — someone still has to strip the bearing. The catch: nights and call-outs are standard, and the job is thankless until something breaks.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Engineering maintenance apprenticeship (Level 3) — the classic four-year route to a real trade.
  • HNC/HND top-up — the step into senior and engineer grades.
  • Ex-forces crossover — REME and other forces engineers are actively courted by industry.
