The short version

Mechanical engineers design, analyse and improve the machines and systems the physical world runs on — turbines, vehicles, medical devices, factory lines. It's the broadest engineering discipline, which is both the appeal and the trap: you can go almost anywhere, but you'll rarely be the specialist.

The pitch: a licensable, internationally recognised profession with a structural skills shortage and work AI mostly assists rather than replaces. The catch: pay is steady rather than spectacular, the documentation load is real, and the jobs follow factories and plants — not the city-centre lifestyle the brochures imply.

Entry routes that actually work

  • MEng/BEng in mechanical engineering — the standard route; MEng fast-tracks Chartered status.
  • Degree apprenticeship (Level 6) — salaried throughout, and employers prefer it because you arrive useful.
  • HND + technician route — slower but debt-free; common path in smaller manufacturers.
