The short version

Care workers provide the personal care, medication support and daily living help that keeps older and disabled people safe — in homes, supported living and care homes. No degree needed; the Care Certificate and a Level 2/3 diploma are the route in and up.

The pitch: the largest employer in the sector, doors open within weeks, and the single best springboard into nursing and allied health. The catch — and it is an honest, significant one: pay sits close to the statutory wage floor and barely moves with experience.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Direct entry — employers train you on the Care Certificate in post.
  • Care worker apprenticeship (Level 2/3) — earn while you qualify.
  • Care experience into nursing — a genuinely underused stepping stone.
