The short version

Account managers own existing client relationships — keeping them happy, renewing contracts and growing what they spend. It's the diplomatic end of the revenue team: fewer cold calls than sales, more difficult conversations about things that went wrong.

The pitch: steadier and less brutal than pure sales, still commercially paid, and reachable without a degree via SDR or customer-service routes. The catch: you carry retention and growth targets for revenue you influence but don't fully control, you absorb client frustration for a living, and "account manager" is the vaguest title in business — read what the role actually owns before you apply.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Promotion from SDR or customer service — the most common route; product and client knowledge wins.
  • Direct junior AM hire — agencies and SaaS firms hire on people skills and industry knowledge.
  • Graduate commercial scheme — larger firms rotate into account management.
