The short version

Customer success managers make sure software customers actually use what they bought — onboarding them, driving adoption, defending renewals and finding expansion. It grew out of SaaS and sits between support and sales: friendlier than a quota-carrying rep, but make no mistake, there is a revenue number behind the friendly check-in call.

The pitch: a genuine tech-industry career without coding or hard selling, decent pay, and routes in from support or account management without a degree. The catch: you own retention metrics you only partly control, the title covers everything from strategic advisor to renamed support rep, and AI is automating the small-account end of the job first.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Customer support promotion — the most common route; SaaS firms promote support agents who show commercial instinct.
  • Account manager crossover — the renewal-and-growth skill set transfers directly.
  • Onboarding / implementation roles — product knowledge plus client contact is the exact CSM base.
