The short version

Data scientists build the models and experiments that turn raw data into predictions — but the day-to-day is mostly problem framing, data wrangling and defending conclusions in meetings, not glamorous AI work.

The pitch: among the best-paid analytical roles in the UK, and one of the few where AI makes you faster rather than redundant. The catch: the entry bar is genuinely high — most data scientists hold a numerate degree and many have a Masters — and a lot of the job is explaining uncertainty to people who wanted certainty.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Numerate degree + Masters/PhD — still the dominant route in; the field is credential-heavy.
  • Conversion MSc — data science or ML Masters after another degree; common but expensive.
  • Analyst → scientist — the realistic sideways path: SQL, Python and statistics picked up on the job.
