The short version

Product managers decide what gets built and why — prioritising ruthlessly, aligning engineers, designers and stakeholders, and owning the outcome. Influence without authority; you write nothing but answer for everything.

The pitch: high-leverage role, strong pay ceiling, and the classic route into startup leadership — no code required. The catch: you're the lightning rod when the product fails, the work is 60% communication and persuasion, and there's no single way in — PMs are usually made in adjacent roles, not hired junior.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Adjacent pivot — engineering, design, data or consulting into product; the dominant route.
  • Graduate / APM programme — rare but exists at big tech; brutally competitive.
  • Internal transfer — domain knowledge beats product credentials internally.
