The short version

Events managers plan and deliver conferences, exhibitions, weddings and festivals — months of budgets, run-sheets and supplier logistics compressed into a day where something always goes wrong and your job is making sure nobody notices. Done well, the work is invisible; that's the point.

The pitch: real responsibility early, tangible results you can stand inside, and — rare for this sector — a job AI genuinely can't do, because the core of it is physical presence and calm under pressure. The catch: pay is modest relative to responsibility, evenings and weekends are structural, and the industry contracts hard when the economy tightens.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Venue/events coordinator — hotels and conference centres hire constantly; learn logistics from the ground up.
  • Events agency project executive — many clients and formats, fast learning.
  • Volunteer/steward at real events — festivals and fundraisers count as genuine experience.
