The short version

SEN teachers work in special schools, resource bases and PRUs with children whose needs mainstream classrooms can't meet. Classes are smaller, teams are bigger, progress is slower and deeper. Pay is the published teacher scale plus a statutory SEN allowance — and the paperwork and emotional load are heavier than mainstream.

It's the strongest job-security position in education: EHCP numbers rise every year and special settings chronically can't recruit. AI drafts resources and paperwork; the human core is untouchable.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Mainstream QTS, then specialise — the standard path, with a mandatory SEN qualification within three years of taking the post.
  • SEN-focused ITT or Teach First — train directly into high-need settings.
  • From TA/care background — experienced SEN support staff are prized candidates.
