The short version

Hospitality managers run hotels, pubs, restaurants and resorts — the rotas, the budgets, the complaints, the licensing, and the service itself when it's busy. It's one of the few management careers with genuinely no degree barrier: the standard route is promotion off the floor.

The pitch: real P&L responsibility early, fast promotion for people who can run a shift, and £██–███K at general-manager level. The catch: the hours are the job — evenings, weekends, bank holidays — and pay stays compressed for years; nearly half the industry earns under £██K.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Promotion from the floor — waiter/bar/receptionist → team leader → deputy → GM. The dominant route.
  • Pubco trainee schemes — pub chains recruit trainee managers and tenants directly.
  • Level 4 Hospitality Manager apprenticeship — earn while training toward deputy/GM level.
