Law & Public Sector careers

The honest read on legal and public-service careers — what solicitors, barristers, officers and officials actually do all day, what the published pay scales really say, and how hard each door is to get through.

Solicitor (Corporate)
You advise companies on deals, contracts and disputes — long hours drafting and negotiating documents, with pay that ranges from solid regional salaries to eye-watering City rates. Qualifying now runs through the SQE.
Barrister
Self-employed courtroom advocate: you argue cases, draft opinions and live off the work you win. The top end is spectacular; most juniors earn modestly, and pupillage is the real bottleneck.
Paralegal / Legal Executive
You do real legal work — research, drafting, case preparation — without the solicitor title. No degree required, pay is modest, but it's the most practical way into law and now counts as qualifying experience for the SQE.
Police Officer
Frontline policing: response shifts, investigations, community work and paperwork on a published pay scale that starts around £31K and tops £50K as a constable. Demanding, structured, and genuinely hard to automate.
Armed Forces (Officer / Soldier)
Serve in the Army, Royal Navy or RAF: structured training, subsidised living, published pay that starts around £26K for other ranks and £35K for officers, and a lifestyle most careers can't match or escape.
Firefighter
Wholetime crew on a watch system: fires, rescues, RTCs and a growing share of medical and community prevention work. Nationally agreed pay starts ~£30K and reaches ~£39K when competent — with fierce competition for places.
Prison Officer
Keep order, run the regime and build the relationships that keep a wing safe. Published pay starts around £35K including unsocial hours — higher in London — with fast recruitment and hard conditions.
Local Government Officer
Run the services a council actually delivers — housing, planning, benefits, licensing, social care support — on the national NJC pay spine from ~£24K to ~£54K, with senior posts above. Stable, pensioned, and stretched.
