The short version

Ecologists survey species and habitats and advise on how development can proceed legally — mostly in consultancies serving the planning system, plus charities and government agencies. It's the version of "working with nature" that actually exists in the UK job market: fieldwork, mapping, reports and planning law.

The pitch: demand is genuinely rising — mandatory biodiversity net gain means nearly every development needs ecological assessment, and senior ecologists are in short supply. The catch: pay sits below comparable professions at every grade, entry is competitive, and the survey season owns your mornings, evenings and summer.

Entry routes that actually work

  • Ecology / zoology degree → assistant ecologist — the standard route; seasonal survey work is the first rung.
  • Degree + specialist MSc — for competitive consultancy and agency posts.
  • Level 7 ecologist degree apprenticeship — employed, salaried, master's-level training.
  • Volunteering → conservation NGO — the slower charity-sector route.
