The short version

Research scientists design experiments and generate knowledge — in universities, research institutes and industry R&D. The PhD is the real entry ticket, and the honest headline is this: academia and industry pay very differently for the same skills, and most doctoral graduates will not land a permanent academic post.

The pitch: the most intellectually free job in science, and industry R&D pays well for it. The catch: academia runs on fixed-term contracts, postdoc pay trails the equivalent industry role by a wide margin, and AI is already automating the literature and analysis side of the job — the bench judgement is what you're selling.

Entry routes that actually work

  • BSc → funded PhD → postdoc or industry R&D — the standard route; UKRI studentships pay a tax-free stipend.
  • Integrated master's → PhD — common in chemistry and physics.
  • MSc → industry scientist — possible, but progression usually wants the doctorate.
  • Technician → part-time PhD — rare, but real in applied and clinical settings.
